Between the 1,190 islands are reefs teeming with marine life, and on the dozens of islands dedicated to tourism is tuition for divers of all levels. Here Ultratravel picks a few of the best resorts from which to take the plunge. Prices are per night, double.
Soneva Fushi
The most blinding attraction of this 65-villa resort is its natural beauty: 100 acres of lush forest fringed with sandy beaches. Relaxation is key here, hence the island's mantra "No news, no shoes". Bicycles are assigned to guests, dinner tables set in the sand, cocktails served on sandbanks at sea.USP for non-divers? The Lime spa, partly underwater so spa-lovers can watch fish while having a facial; gym and yoga pavilion; outdoor saltwater flotation pool; and raw-food bar whose treats are both healthy and delicious.

Tree Madivaru
The wildest of the bunch: an intimate, yet still thoroughly luxurious camp, whose six tented encampments are placed between lush tropical foliage. Each of the creamy canvas "villas" is made up of a bedroom, bathroom and chill-out tent, linked by decking. Because the island is tiny (just 16,000 square metres) it's important to be able to get off: to nearby reefs or to explore on the Madi, a Turkish gulet.
